Community and Wellbeing

Community and Wellbeing

Medical school is an incredibly exciting but also challenging experience; so, during these four fantastic years, the purpose of the wellbeing portfolio is to support the students as best as possible. Finding a balance between family, work life and studies can be quite difficult, and it’s therefore important to seek help early on. The wellbeing portfolio is dedicated to encouraging students to:

  • Be well-equipped for the hurdles ahead
  • Recognise when their peers are at risk and;
  • Increase the awareness and knowledge of mental health

According to a 2013 Survey conducted by Beyondblue:

“One in five Australian medical students had suicidal thoughts in the past year and more than four in 10 students are highly likely to have a minor psychiatric disorder, like mild depression or mild anxiety”.

The GUMS team is at the ready to provide you with tips, connect you with people, as well as various services to promote your wellbeing. Check out the new GUMS Help service (under My Account) if you have any problems, questions or just need some advice.

Also, if you ever need a helping hand, please feel free to shoot me an email at minella.lalloz@griffithuni.edu.au and/or chat in person. On behalf of the GUMS team and myself, I hope to make your life at Medical School enjoyable and wish you an exceptional 2016!
