My Quarantine Podcast Addictions

My caffeine free journey

My days are kind of like the cell cycle; G0 = sleep; G1 = training; S1 = uni; G2 = work; M = study. My checkpoints are driving between these events. Being the good labile tissue that I am, this cycle repeats constantly…maybe I’m just a tumour…

However, given current events, I have increasing amounts of time to myself. Consequently, I have discovered that my own thoughts are extremely boring. With this realisation, I began listening to an unhealthy number of podcasts to satiate my need for human connection, inspiration and laughter. So, these are some of my suggestions for your own listening:

The Joe Rogan Experience

Joe Rogan is a comedian, UFC commentator and actor. But he is probably more celebrated for his career as a podcast host. Along with his conversations being very natural and almost exclusively occurring face-to-face, his podcasts are never about a single topic; they are bound to touch on all sorts of unexpected areas. However, you may want to dedicate more than one listening session per podcast, with most episodes ranging from 2.5-4hrs. With over 1460 episodes, you’re bound to find one you like. Here are some of my favourites:

#1212 – David Goggins:

“That was the worst pain I’ve experienced in my entire life. I was pissin’ Coca Cola outta me.” Yeah…so this guy is as tough as they come. From an obese young man to a Navy SEAL, ultramarathon runner, and pull-up world record holder, this guy is extraordinary. The Goggins philosophy is one of striving for personal bests (maybe avoid the rhabdo though). This is one incredible conversation that is bound to spark some temporary motivation!

#1393 – James Wilks & Chris Kresser – The Game Changers Debate:

Before listening to this podcast, I had not viewed “The Game Changers”, nor had I listened to the previous podcast with Chris Kresser alone on the ‘debunking’ of The Game Changers documentary. Regardless of what side of the debate you associate with, this episode will definitely challenge your views! Plus, it does give some actual practical relevance to your EBP content. I would love to hear your thoughts on this saucy number!

#1255 – Alex Jones Returns!

I have never, and never will I again, hear something so outrageous. In case you haven’t heard of him, Alex Jones is a “righty” conspiracy theorist and host of InfoWars. From mind control to 5G to cyborgs, this man’s genuine views will have you in complete disbelief. What astounded me was that, despite his quirks, he is extremely intelligent. I’m begging you to stick with this one.

#737 – Lance Armstrong

I’ve always struggled with Lance. Cheat, arrogant, betrayal. However, this podcast added a fresh perspective. I could see how easy it would have been to fall into the “doping routine” when surrounded by the environment that is professional cycling. This podcast got me through my Thursday morning run and gave some context to erythropoiesis and its marvellous effects.

#1169 – Elon Musk

After seeing videos of Musk-daddy dancing on stage at a Tesla event in China, I thought he was super relatable and…well, a pretty fun dude. After starting this podcast, I realised that he is very…odd. I can’t put my finger on it. Don’t get me wrong – incredible, smart, down-to-earth. But I think he views his day-to-day work as “normal”. (Edit: new Musk podcast added since X Æ A-Xii spawned; this one is even better)

Dr. Matt & Dr. Mike’s Medical Podcast

I took it upon myself to follow Christian’s guidance and use this series to compliment my learning. I must say, exercising and listening to a relevant podcast is incredibly beneficial. I find I relate sections of knowledge from the podcasts to certain geographical areas where I was running at the time I heard it. Give it a go!

Episode 39 – Diabetic ketoacidosis:

An amazing episode, featuring Griffith Alumni, Dr Dinesh Palipana. This episode uses a clinical case to discuss the pathophysiology, potential clinical features and examination results, and treatment of DKA. A great insight into the clinical world.

Episode 10 – Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System (RAAS):

It’s a podcast about RAAS…need I say more?

Episode 28 – Cancer:

I really enjoyed the structure of this podcast. The pathophysiology of cancer was discussed in relation to the hallmarks of cancer, whilst incorporating a beautiful analogy to represent the process. Highly valuable to assist with your basic understanding of the disease.

Jocko Podcast:

Jocko Willink is a retired Navy SEAL soldier and officer. Google a picture of him. If you think he could be anything else…you’re wrong. I have only listened to this episode, and it was incredible:

221: The Unimaginable Path of Jonny Kim: SEAL Combat Medic, Doctor, Astronaut

Yes. Jonny Kim really has held each of those titles. Just reading the description made me feel useless; what an over-achiever. I was drawn to this podcast as I always thought that a possible alternative to medicine would be to join the SAS. Something about the adrenaline, the pressure, the brotherhood, mixed with the extreme training. This podcast has so many unexpected turns. You will tear-up in parts, and be completely motivated in others. I urge you to try this one, despite its length – you won’t regret it.

Feel free to contact me with any thoughts on these podcasts (no matter how controversial) and suggestions that you have for me!

Wishing you all the very best in these times,

Toby Redler
